Diabetes, insulin resistance, obesity, and metabolic disorders are all medical problems we treat at the Diabetes & Osteoporosis Center, and in most cases, our patients come to us experiencing more than one of these medical conditions at one time.
Diabetes affects more than 250,000 people within the U.S. alone, and it’s a disease that affects a growing number of people around the world. The disease affects the endocrine system and takes place when the glucose produced within the body isn’t used in the way it should be. This generally occurs due to a problem with the quantity or functionality of the hormone insulin. Sugars accumulate within the blood, and if this disease is left untreated, it can lead to serious health complications that can be debilitating, and even deadly. Several different types of diabetes exist, including type I and type II diabetes.
Insulin resistance generally occurs before the development of type II diabetes, and it’s caused by both lifestyle and genetic factors. This condition occurs when the cells of the body become resistant to insulin, reducing the normal response of the body to insulin. Since more insulin is needed to get the proper effect, the pancreas begins compensating by producing even more insulin, and eventually the pancreas is not able to produce enough insulin for the body’s demands, allowing blood sugar to rise. If left untreated, this metabolic disorder can increase the risk of diabetes, heart disease, and other serious medical problems.
Obesity involves having an excessive amount of body fat, and this complex disorder is far more than a cosmetic issue. It has the potential to increase the risk of health problems and diseases, including high blood pressure, heart disease, and diabetes. Body weight is influenced by hormonal, genetic, and behavioral factors, and in some cases, it may be traced to a medical cause, such as Cushing’s syndrome or Prader-Willi syndrome. Since obesity can result in many severe complications that shorten lifespan and reduce quality of life, prompt treatment is essential.
How We Can Help
At the Diabetes & Osteoporosis Center, we offer cutting-edge treatment for diabetes, insulin resistance, obesity, and other metabolic disorders. We have a lab on premises to ensure patients can have their lab needs dealt with on-site, speeding up the diagnosis and treatment process.
